An international group of agricultural scientists, including University of Georgia and USDA scientists based in Georgia, have mapped the genetic code of the peanut. Results of the five-year research project give scientists around the world a map with which to unlock some of the genetic potential of the peanut plant.

Economists from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences recommend that Georgia farmers understand their production costs before planting next year’s crops.

Georgia’s dryland peanut crop excelled this year, while irrigated fields lacked in comparison to past years, said University of Georgia Cooperative Extension peanut agronomist Scott Monfort. The result is a crop estimated to average 4,400 pounds per acre.

There are a limited number of compounds available to combat fungal infections in both plants and people. A team of University of Georgia researchers is helping to assess the risk posed by fungi developing widespread resistance to the stable of antifungal compounds used in the United States.

Aspergillus crown rot disease is on the rise in Georgia peanut fields and University of Georgia researchers are working to pinpoint why. At present, university scientists recommend that farmers encountering this problem in their fields stop saving seed from year to year in an effort to reduce the disease while better control methods are found. The first line of defense has been fungicide application either in furrow or directly to the seed.

As part of the Georgia Peanut Tour next week, the University of Georgia Peanut Team will educate attendees about peanut production. This year’s tour is slated for Tuesday, Sept. 19, to Thursday, Sept. 21, and based in Albany, Georgia.

University of Georgia cotton and peanut scientists will showcase their research in a joint field day on Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Tifton, Georgia.

The Georgia Peanut Achievement Club recognized the state’s top peanut producers at its club’s annual meeting, which was held Aug. 18-20 at Amelia Island, Florida. The University of Georgia Peanut Team also shared its latest research findings at the meeting.
