Community and School Gardens
A recent survey found there were more than 360 community and school gardens across the state. With that many Georgians gardening, there are bound to be questions about picking the right crops, identifying insects and improving garden soil. To that end, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is expanding its already existing community and school garden outreach efforts.

Cowpea Curculio
Southerners love crowder, purple hull and black-eyed peas; so do cowpea curculios, a weevil that feeds on Southern peas. University of Georgia researchers in Tifton are working to eliminate this pest, which causes substantial yield losses to Southern peas grown in south Georgia.
Palmer amaranth can reach heights of up to 7-10 feet. UGA Extension weed specialist Eric Prostko encourages farmers to continue to control Palmer amaranth even after their corn is harvested. CAES News
Chemistry Rotation
A University of Georgia professor is advocating that farmers rotate the pesticides they apply to cotton crops in order to prevent another outbreak of the herbicide-resistant weed, Palmer amaranth.

Specialized Academic Courses
The addition of specialized agriscience and environmental systems courses — precision agriculture, sustainable agriculture and plant breeding/genetics — is expected to bolster already strong academic programs at the University of Georgia Athens and Tifton campuses.

Graduate Student Studies Overseas
Studying overseas was an eye-opening experience for University of Georgia graduate student Camden Lowrance. Six months in Greece allowed Lowrance to work on his master’s thesis and to prove that he could more than survive — he could excel at his work — in a foreign country.

AGL Class I Graduates
After two years learning about Georgia’s largest industry and developing leadership skills, the inaugural class of the Advancing Georgia’s Leaders in Agriculture and Forestry has graduated from the program.

Global Goals for CAES
Within the next decade the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Office of Global Programs will be recognized among land grant institutions for the depth, diversity and quality of its international engagement. This is the vision that came out of the office’s strategic planning meeting held on June 19 at the State Botanical Gardens of Georgia.
